When you apply for federal student aid, your answers to the questions in Step 3 of the paper FAFSA or the Dependency Status section of the online FAFSA will determine whether you're considered dependent on your parents or independent. If you're considered dependent, your parents' income and assets as well as your own must be used when determining your student aid eligibility. You must meet the requirements for an Independent Student in order for your parents' information not to be used when being evaluated for financial aid.
